G'day Bird

Help

G'day Bird shows you a new Australian bird every morning, with its real call. If something isn't working, or you have a better photo or recording, write to gdaybird@squarebysquare.org. It's a small team; you'll get a person.

The morning call

At the time you choose in the app's Settings (8:00 am unless you change it), the day's bird sings. Use "Send a test call" in the app's Settings to hear one straight away.

On iPhone it's a notification, with the bird singing as its sound. It won't be heard if the phone is on silent, or if a Focus is hiding G'day Bird's notifications. Check iOS Settings › Notifications › G'day Bird.

On Android it's an alarm: the phone wakes, the bird sings at your alarm volume, and its card shows over the lock screen. It needs notifications to be allowed for G'day Bird. If it arrives a few minutes late, allow exact alarms; if it sings without showing its card, allow the full-screen alarm. The app's Settings offers each of these when it's off.

The widget

On iPhone, touch and hold the home screen, tap the + (or "Edit"), and search for G'day Bird. On Android, touch and hold the home screen, choose Widgets, and find G'day Bird. Small, medium and large widgets all change to the new bird at the same time as the app.

The Dynamic Island

On iPhone, tap the bird icon on the Today tab to send the bird up for a visit. It leaves after a few hours; that's iOS, not the bird. It needs an iPhone 14 Pro or later; on other iPhones the visit shows on the lock screen instead. Android phones have no Dynamic Island, so the bird keeps to the widget there.

Discover and likes

Each morning a handful of new birds are dealt into Discover, and you get a few likes a day to keep the ones you fancy. When the likes run out, name the bird that's singing (or sing it back) to earn more. At the end of the day's birds the app suggests going outside, and deals a few more if you insist.

A better photo or recording

Tap the ⓘ on any photo for the credit and a "Submit a better…" link. Please quote the catalogue number shown there (№ 45, say) so we know exactly which record you mean. We can only use photos and recordings that are public domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA, or that you give us permission to use with a credit to you.

Photographs and recordings

Every photo and call is used under an open licence, and the ⓘ on each photo gives the photographer, recordist, licence and source. If you're a creator and something is credited wrongly, tell us and it will be fixed in the next content release, which reaches phones without an app update.

Privacy

No accounts, no tracking, nothing about you leaves the phone; the only thing the app ever sends is an anonymous thumbs up or down if you rate a photo or a call, and tips are handled by Apple on iPhone and by Google Play on Android. The details are on the privacy page.
